>Nutrition Activity in Talibon, Bohol, Philippines


      Talibon Mayor Juanario Item led Talibongnons in the culmination program of Nutrition Month celebration on the theme, “Wastong Nutrisyon Kailangan, Lifestyle Diseases Iwasan” held at the President Carlos P. Garcia Multi-Purpose Center on July 31.
      The event kicked off with a short program hosted by Mario Autentico and Lucille Amba.
      Municipal Budget Officer Dioscoro Valmoria led the opening prayer and Belinda Eleccion led the singing of the national and the Bohol hymns.
      Municipal Councilor Tomas Cornelio, chair of the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) Committee on Health and Appropriation, gave the welcome address.
      Winners of the dance contest presented an intermission numbers, while a high school student gave a song number.
      Item, in his message, stated expressed concern on the reports reaching his office about the alarming dengue cases in barangay Poblacion.
      He reminded everyone that cleanliness in the immediate surroundings is very important to prevent the breeding of dengue carrier mosquitoes.
      He further asked Municipal Health Office and Municipal Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Francisco Ngoboc to pay serious attention to the problem and requested all constituents to do their share in protecting the possibility of a dengue outbreak in the town by keeping their premises clean always.
      He informed everybody that dengue is more dangerous compared to the reported A(H1N1) diseases.
      Hospital record revealed that there were already 22 cases of dengue in the town where most of the victims were children, one of them had died.
      Dr. Ngoboc urged everyone to choose nutritious food and stay away from vices that may lead to lifestyle diseases.
      He told Mayor Item that they have already conducted a series of fogging and Information Education Campaign (IEC) at the affected area and the neighboring barangays.
      The Municipal Nutrition Council (MNC) also conducted a nutri-raffle draw, a fund-raising project.
      Winners included Eliza Luzuriaga, who went home with a new stand fan as third prize; Liza Lina Buno, who rode home with her new BMX bike as the second prize; and Jelo Lofranco, who got the first prize of a brand new mountain bike.
      The program clinched with the distribution of cash prizes to winners of the different contests prepared for the month-long celebration.
      Mayor Item personally handed the prizes, as assisted by Councilor Cornelio, Dr. Ngoboc and Valmoria.
      The afternoon event wrapped up with the active participation of the teachers and fourth year students of Blessed Trinity College; San Jose National High School; Bohol Maranatha Christian School; Bohol Institute of Technology-IC; teachers and grade six pupils of Talibon Central Elementary School, Blessed Trinity Elementary School, national, provincial and local employees.
