Campaign Against Illegal Fishing in Iloilo

Exactly 530 illegal fishermen in the province have been arrested in the intensified campaign against illegal fishing by the Iloilo Provincial Police Office (IPPO) and the Bantay Dagat.

IPPO Director Ricardo De la Paz in an interview said that the arrests of illegal fishermen from January to September this year is much higher compared to last year’s 149.

During the period, the police also conducted 77 operations while only 26 in 2007.

During these operations, 150 fishing boats were impounded as compared to last year of 36 boats.

De la Paz said that their intensified campaign is in line with the order of Gov. Niel Tupas to curb illegal fishing in the coastal areas of Iloilo province.

“The campaign is a priority of the governor,” the IPPO director said.

Those arrested were mostly due to use of illegal fishing gears, which is prohibited under the Fisheries Code. The fishermen are now facing charges. (
