4 Bohol Mayors Like Lottery

At least four mayors in the province have declared they do not favor the entry of small town lottery (STL) here.

This despite the growing support the legalized numbers game has gained among other local chief executives who want to take advantage of a 10-percent cut from revenues of operators located in their towns.

Among those who have expressed their opposition to the entry of STL are Tagbilaran Mayor Dan Lim, Maribojoc Mayor Leoncio Evasco, Dauis Mayor Luciano Bongalos and Loon Mayor Lloyd Peter Lopez.

According to the mayors, STL will only aggravate the widespread illegal gambling in their area.

People will now have to bet twice as much since illegal suertres operations remain rampant in the province, they said.

However, an official of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Bohol Chapter, the organization of town mayors, is keen on allowing STL in his municipality.

The mayor, who refuses to be named at this time, said he knows many other municipal mayors who want to tolerate the operation of STL.

Getting 10-percent from the revenues of operators is already a big help to cash-strapped local government units, according to the LMP-Bohol official. – the Bohol Chronicle
